Imran Khan set to be the next PM of Pakistan

Imran Khan led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has emerged as the largest party in an election that is the only second civilian transfer of power in Pakistan’s 70-year old history. The 2018 general elections of Pakistan were indeed a celebration of its democracy. Even though claims of the elections being rigged did dampen this celebration. The run-up to the election and the vote count itself has been very controversial. The PML-N complained of a targeted breakdown the army in favour of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Other parties also complained of the voting machines being rigged. The election officials and the army both denied the allegations.

The security concerns had led to the deployment of 800,000 security personnel across 85,000 polling stations. Despite stringent measures, however, tragedy struck in form of a suicide bomber near a polling station in Quetta. The heinous act claimed the lives, 31 people. The leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan, however, promises a brighter future that will start looking into the claims of the elections being rigged. “I started this struggle 22 years ago and thankfully today I have been given a chance to fulfill what I dreamt for the country,” said Khan.

The aspiring prime minister also claimed “We are going to uplift Pakistan’s poor and help our country’s laborers. Corruption has been eating Pakistan as a kind of cancer. We will set an example that the law will be the same for everybody”.

Pakistan has 106 million registered voters, a turnout of approximately half of them decided to shun the traditional parties and go for a relatively newer Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The party led the cricketer turned politician grabbed 73 out of the 272 seats.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will most probably be forming the next government in the nuclear developing nation. Though it is still not clear who the coalition will be with.

Government changes in a nuclear-nation in an important geopolitical area. The world currently has its eyes on Pakistan to see if a history of corruption or military interference is repeated or promises of transparency, good governance and upliftment materialize.
